About Me

I am an early-retired electrical engineer. I am a maker. I am a lazy, but eager gardener. I volunteer at my local Makerspace.

I am a childfree by choice stay at home wife to my high school sweetheart. I am an autoimmune patient with an invisible disability. I'm a consumer of endless medical studies. I am mentally hyper-organized, but sometimes I fail at long term execution. I am always tired.

I'm a huge nerd. A lover of sci-fi and fantasy. An artist and aspiring author. I devour a good book.

I am a pretty good chef, always striving to find new dishes - sometimes to challenge me and sometimes just to get dinner on the table.

I'm a tentative, but stalwart friend. I'm the bulldog who fights for those who have earned my trust.

The terms that could be used to describe me and my situation are all so loaded with preformed assumptions that I feel the need to carry my whole identity with me, like a bag of tricks I'm ready to spill out in front anyone who asks "What do you do?", which we all know is really just the question "Who are you?" in disguise.

I started this blog partially because I wanted a place to post my own random mutterings, partially because the landscape of social media seems a little blurry to me, and partially because I wanted a place to share things that don't fit within the confines of standard social media.  Recipes, art, short stories, medical issues, and random thoughts might be found here.

Medical & Health Tracking Apps

Data is everything in my world.  As an engineer, I could track anything with enough data.  It should come as no surprise that I'm fascinated by finding ways to track my Sjogrens symptoms and other health data.  This will be a living document, because as I try new apps and devices I'll add to it.  Note that I'm only including medical tracking apps and not food logging, weight loss, or fitness apps. There are too many of these to count and everyone has their own preference. Also, I only use Android products. Sorry, Apple users! Apps (Items in BOLD are currently in use) Symptom & Medication Tracking WebMD Allergy I used this for a little while to try to help me determine when I was probably going to have a flare-up based on the allergen in the air.  As far as environmental allergies go I'm pretty much only allergic to dust, which I could get exposed to even on a day when the dust was low according to this app.  I could see it being useful to ...

Laughter at the Academy, by Seanan McGuire

Laughter at the Academy by Seanan McGuire  TL;DR - I recommend this book of short stories to anyone who likes mad scientists, broken dolls, Peter Pan, and stories with dark twists. I first encountered Seanan McGuire when I picked up her novel Feed, which is written under the pseudonym Mira Grant.  I was expecting very little as I was not a huge fan of zombie fiction at the time.  I wouldn't say I was extremely well versed in zombie fiction, but rather that I had a lot of preconceptions about the genre based on the TV and movies that I'd seen on the subject.  But N. K. Jemisin had given the book five stars, and I was going down a rabbit hole of reading books that authors I have much regard for (N. K. Jemisin, Robin Hobb, Patrick Rothfuss, and Rick Riordan) were rating highly.   I came away from that series - full of political intrigue, conspiracy plots, cloning, zombie kangaroos, and scientists who are either mad or the only sane ones there (or ...

My First Craft Fair!

Yesterday I was a first-time vendor at the Dallas Makerspace Holiday Gift Fair!  So many people stopped by my booth and told me how pretty my paintings were.  I was really happy with how it went, especially since I'd never done this before.  I came away with some definite notes for next time, but no real failures on my part.  One concept that was particularly brought home for me was that I needed more items in the $5-$20 range.  A lot of people wanted to take something home, but weren't prepared to pay the prices for my originals. I think that next fair I'll be offering some smaller options, perhaps made via Dye Sublimation.  I've been digitizing my work as much as possible, and I think that will be a way I can add some smaller items (perhaps with my business information in a not too obnoxious placement) that won't cost me much time or money.   Another thing that I heard a lot of  is "Are you going to teach a class on thi...
